Today we will visit the port of Arcade. It belongs to the municipality of Soutomaior, is situated in the Ría de Vigo near the mouth of the River Verdugo. We will also see the fascinating effect of the tides in this beautiful place.

There are in the port small boats for sport fishing and others for shellfish gathering. The extraction of clams, cockles and especially oysters is an important resource. Every year in the month of April in Arcade the Fiesta de la Ostra (Oyster Festival) is held. This delicacy is marketed both nationally and internationally.
Soutomaior has 7300 inhabitants. It is divided into two parishes: San Salvador de Soutomaior, is the municipal capital and is located in the interior. It is one of its two urban areas and the Town Hall is there. On the other hand, the parish of Santiago de Arcade, the other urban area around the N-550 road, here is the Port we visit today.
We see the Ensenada de San Simon which is the part of the Ría de Vigo from the Strait of Rande inland. We also see the Island of San Simón.

We can see from the port the Alvedosas Islands, are two small islands about 100 meters long each located 800 meters from the port, near the mouth of the River Verdugo.
The landing pier we see in the centre of the picture is occupied by all the small boats. However, in the next picture we see that at low tide most of them are not in place because they have gone to fish to the shellfish area.

This is a statue honouring the shellfish gatherers.
Getting closer we see some shellfish gatherers and behind San Simón Island, which is about 3.5 kilometres in a straight line from the port.
We say goodbye with one last look at the Ría de Vigo.
